Introduction
The European Association of Urology was originally founded in 1972. In 1996, the EAU Board decided to modernise and adapt the structure of the EAU. Membership has extended and is now open to a large number of urological professionals, urologists-in-training and urological scientists in Europe and abroad. In addition, the number of EAU activities accessible for a large public has increased. Today it is estimated that there are approximately 16.000 urologists in Europe. The EAU is a leading partner in the intercontinental discussion concerning global urological affairs.
Mission statement
The EAU is a purely scientific organisation and has the following mission statement:
- To act as the representative body for all European urologists and thus facilitate the continuous development of urology and all its subspecialties;
- To foster and proliferate the highest standards of urological care throughout Europe;
- To encourage urological research and enable the broadcasting of its results;
- To promote contributions to the medical and scientific literature by its members;
- To promote European urological achievements in Europe and worldwide;
- To establish standards for training and European urological practice;
- To contribute to the determination of European urological health care policies
Organisation
The EAU is composed of an Executive Committee (EC) and the chairmen of the EAU offices. Together they form the EAU Board.
The EC is chaired by the Secretary General (Per-Anders Abrahamsson) who is responsible, together with the other members of the EC, for the implementation of all programmes and activities decided by the Board. An Executive member related to education (Chris Chapple), an Executive member related to communication/Treasurer (Manfred Wirth) and an Executive Member related to science (Walter Artibani) support the Secretary General.
Over one hundred European urologists are involved in the EAU Offices and Committees. They do not work at the EAU, but they meet every now and then to discuss their tasks within the EAU.
An administrative body, the EAU Central Office, supports the EC and the offices of the EAU. The Executive Management team supervises the Central office; the Operational Manager (Jacqueline Roelofswaard) supervises and organises all operational affairs of the EAU Central Office, the Business Manager (Maurice Schlief) takes care of all business and economical aspects of the EAU. The Central Office is located in Arnhem and employs approximately 35 persons.
Congress Consultants b.v., under the leadership of Congress Manager Patricia de Bont, takes care of the organisation and logistics of all congresses, meetings, etc.
General Assembly
The General Assembly is the official meeting for EAU members and is held annually. The General Assembly coincides with the EAU Annual Meeting. All active members of the EAU are entitled to vote at the General Assembly. Decisions are made by a simple majority of votes by Active Members present. The General Assembly gives approval of new and honorary members of the EAU. Also, election of the EC and nomination of new Board members take place during the General Assembly.
Goals and Strategies
In order to achieve its mission, the EAU has defined its goals and strategies in a few keywords:
Membership
All registered European urologists and all European urologists-in-training are eligible for membership of the EAU. Furthermore, interested non-European urologists are welcome to join the EAU. To become a member please click here.
Education
Education and postgraduate training are the central tasks of the EAU. The aim of EAU education is to promote the quality of urological education across Europe. The programmes are easily accessible and affordable for all European urologists and urologists-in-training.
EAU education is developed, organised and supervised by the European School of Urology (ESU), the official education office of the EAU. The ESU organises courses at the occasion of the annual EAU congress and in collaboration with the European National Urological Associations.
Research
A major task of the EAU is to support all relevant European scientific activities. A research fellowship programme is funded through the European Urological Scholarship Programme (EUSP).
Publications
Promotion and proliferation of scientific communication amongst European urologists is an important task of the EAU. European Urology® is the official scientific journal of the EAU. The European Association of Urology Video Committee is the editorial body responsible for the European Urology Video Journal®. This Video Journal distributes the best new videos on urological diseases and techniques. The official EAU newsletter, European Urology Today®, distributes information about European urology in the broadest sense. It includes news on the association and its various committees, as well as information on affiliated European urological associations and organisations. Finally, the EAU has special sections on the Internet, such as Uroweb (www.uroweb.org), which allows direct communication between members.
