Highlights of 2nd Day Session at the 1st European Multidisciplinary Meeting on Urological Cancers

Saturday, 10 November 2007 - Prostate cancer treatment was the focus of the 2nd day session at the 1st European Multidisciplinary Meeting on Urological Cancers. The morning session was on “Innovations and future treatment options in localised prostate cancer”.

The following excerpts were selected from this session:
“A new contrast medium under investigation for clinical application in magnetic resonance lymphography are nanoparticle containing iron. Magnetic resonance lymphography can distinguish macrophages from surrounding unaffected tissue", J. Barentsz (Nijmegen, Netherlands) pointed out in his presentation on Imaging. "MRI scans provide a road map for both local tumours and nodes and should thus be included in the detection, localisation and staging of prostate cancer if possible", Barentsz added in his presentation.

"Prostate specific antigen Nadir within three months is a good prognostic indicator", M. Marberger (Vienna, Austria) indicated in his presentation on "Innovations in surgery". "Energy ablative techniques can cure prostate cancer. The challenges are to identify the index tumour and to verify whether complete ablation can be obtained", Marberger added in his presentation.

"Local high-dose image-guided 4D radiotherapy shows excellent results when applied within strict treatment protocols. Establishing the tumour margin is the determining factor in terms of cure or chance of recurrence”, J. Lebesque (Amsterdam, Netherlands) said in his presentation on “Innovations in radiotherapy".
